Accept postings to rural areas – NSS personnel, doctors advised.

Alex Afenyo-Markin gave the piece of advice The Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency in the Central Region has made passionate appeal to medical doctors to accept postings to rural areas to enable the inhabitants feel part of the country. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin said: “May I also make a plea to the national service personnel, nurses and doctors to stop lobbying to be sent to big institutions”. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP made the appeal while adding his voice to an appeal by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to newly qualified doctors to accept postings to rural areas. While delivering a speech at the 50th congregation and 5th oath-taking and induction ceremony of the School of Medical Sciences of the University of Cape Coast in the Central Region, President Akufo-Addo urged newly qualified doctors who are posted to rural communities to undertake their housemanship not to see it as a form of punishment. According to the President, “the early Ghanaian doctors of legend, the pioneers who built the medical profession, such as Charles Easmon, Silas Dodoo, Cornelius Quarcoopome and Felix Konotey-Ahulu, amongst others, on their return home from qualifying in England, went to work in the rural areas with relish and enthusiasm, at a time when our country was less developed and with fewer infrastructure”. Mr. Afenyo-Markin told TV3’s New Day host Bright Nana Amfoh on Monday that “of late, everyone going to do the national service wants a big company that can employ them after the service. But if all of you are at the big companies, who will go to the rural areas to also offer services to those living there?” “I will want to make a plea to them to go to the rural areas so that [rural folks] will know they are also part of the country,” the MP said. A former Deputy Minister of Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, questioned why facilities have not been created in the rural areas to attract doctors and other professionals to these areas. “The conditions at these rural areas should be improved and that is the most important thing,” he suggested. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said: “While in opposition, [President Akufo-Addo] should have planned to what he wants to do to motivate [doctors] to accept postings to the rural areas”. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) man said “[President Akufo-Addo] should have told [Ghanaians] what [he] would do before coming to power and now, they must admit that they lied to the people of Ghana and they must apologize to the people of Ghana”.
