Accreditation Board To Scruitinize Award of Honorary PhDs

– The National Accreditation Board (NAB) has expressed concern about the spate of conferment of honorary degrees and professorial titles on some personalities.

It said these offers were by some unaccredited institutions, accredited institutions unqualified to award degrees on their own, or other institutions with doubtful credentials.

In a statement signed by Dr Kingsley Nyarko, the Executive Secretary of NAB, said the Board had been reliably informed that another of such unaccredited institution – Rescue Mission Theological University – is scheduled to confer such honorary degrees on some gullible and unsuspecting individuals.

“The security agencies have been alerted to arrest this worrying trend of institutions with doubtful and questionable existence coming into our country to perform such ridiculous activities,” the statement said.

For the avoidance of doubt, the following institutions have neither been accredited in Ghana nor in their home countries by the recognised accrediting bodies: Day Spring Christian University of Mississippi, Pan African Clergy Council and Bible College, Global Centre for Transformational Leadership and World Council for Evangelical Clergy.

Others are Peristrofi Word Honorary International, King of Kings World Foundation, King of Kings Bible College, and Riches Theological College and Clergy Council.

The rest are Bishop Gilson University, International Christian University and European American University.

“The National Accreditation Board, by this statement, is advising all foreign tertiary education institutions with the intent to confer any academic awards on personalities in Ghana to seek its initial approval.

“Further, we wish to reiterate our resolve and commitment to work with the security agencies and all stakeholders to put a stop to these embarrassing and worrying activities by these unscrupulous groups, which cast a slur or disdain on our international reputation,” it stated.
