Thomas Amoaning, a graduate of Adeiso Senior High School who scored 8As in 2020 West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) is to receive a government scholarship.
This follows a directive President Nana Akufo-Addo gave the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat to grant a full scholarship to Amoaning. Akufo-Addo’s directive is in response to the story of Amoaning which popped up on social media a few days ago.
Not long after WAEC released the result of the 2020 WASSCE, Amoaning’s brilliant got performance published on online media platforms.
In a video sighted on Graphic.com.gh, the boy narrated how he had to walk six kilometres from his home at Asuaba to attend classes at Adeiso SHS every school day.
Despite the odds, Amoaning who offered General Arts scored As in the eight subjects he sat for in the WASSCE namely English Language, Mathematics (Core), Integrated Science, Economics, Geography, Government and Mathematics (Elective).
His challenge after passing getting the ultimate in WASSCE was how he was going to realise his dream of pursuing a degree in Economics from the University of Ghana.
Luck has smiled on Amoaning after his story caught the attention of President Akufo-Addo and he has directed that he [Amoaning] should be given a full scholarship for his tertiary studies.
In a letter YEN.com.gh sighted on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat disclosed that the socio-geographical background of Amoah was taken into consideration by the president in the offer of the scholarship.
Already, the letter signed by the registrar at the secretariat Kingsley Agyemang indicated, Amoaning’s family has been contacted and a meeting is expected to be held on Friday, November 27, 2020, to discuss the scholarship in detail/
“The Scholarships Secretariat has subsequently established contact with the student and parents and will on Friday 27th November, 2020 pay a visit to the family to discuss their needs in detail,” the statement aid.
Amoaning happens to be among a number of SHS graduates who have scored 8As in the WASSCE 2020.
