AFUA KOBI AMPEM GIRLS’ SHS

AFUA KOBI AMPEM GIRLS’ SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTION

The school is situated at Trabuom, which is 22km west of Kumasi from Adum in the Atwima-Kwanwoma district. Its location is outside the hustling and bustling life of the city, coupled with its serene atmosphere and a well secured compound that makes it conducive for effective teaching and learning.

Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS was established in 1975 by General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong who was the former head of state of Ghana and a native of Atwima Hwidiem which is next to Atwima Trabuom where he attended his elementary school.

General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong noticed the pains and suffering he went through when he attended his elementary school, he realized the poor facilities and lack of skilled personnel were big problems hindering the school and that made him establish the school. The school was formally called Trabuom Senior High School in 1975. After some time, it was changed to Atwimaman Secondary School in 1980 which was still a mixed school, at that time the total number of students in the school was two hundred and fifty(250).

Atwimaman faced many difficulties , teachers did not want to teach in the school due to the lack of facilities and poor road networks. In 2003, His Majesty Otumfour Osei Tutu II ,the Ashanti saw the problem of the school, so he decided to renovate the school and change its name from Atwimaman S.S.S. to AFUA KOBI AMPEM GIRLS’ SHS(AKAGSHS),Which was the name of the queen mother of Ashanti kingdom, it was made a single sex school (only females).Otumfour Osei Tutu II contributed massively to the development of the school. He donated 200 mono desks, 100 double decker beds, 50 dining hall tables and 100 benches. With this upliftment of the school by Otumfour, the number of students in the school increased from 250 boys and girls to 500 female students. Parents in Ashanti region became convinced about sending their girl-child to a single sex school because they knew their wards will get good training. Since then, Afua Kobi Ampem started developing with many facilities where classroom blocks were built and various dormitories were also built.

Now we can boldly say that Afua Kobi Ampem is among the top schools in the country, which has become a model school for girls to be trained to fit into the society and become useful citizens to drive the nation forward.

Thanks be to God and some and some great personalities like Mrs.Victoria Derkyi Annan, the princess of Tafo in the Ashanti region , the first female head mistress of the school Professor  Peter Gyawu, the former chairman of board of governors of the school who was the head of department of Agriculture at KNUST in Kumasi and Sir Justice Dennis Adjei a former student of Atwimaman who became a chairman of board of governors of the school and all the stakeholders who contributed to make the school what it is today.
